Gizmodo: Hyperblogging for Techies with a Sense of Humor

For this week’s reaction post, I decided to analyze Gizmodo, a technology blog with a ridiculous amount of updates (in the last 24 hours there have been 61 posts). The posts range from a few sentences to full articles, sometimes just highlighting an interesting video clip or photo. They cover the latest Apple rumors, do reviews of new devices, have video game and computer software news, iPhone news etc.

As far as aesthetics, I viewed the site in Firefox at 1280 x 800 and it looks appealing and provides a good amount and balance of pictures, videos and text without overwhelming the audience.

I like the layout with some ads on both sides, the contact information of the staff on the left, and each post’s info and summary blurb on the right (sometimes substituted by a user comment). Obviously having the pictures and main post links in the middle is desirable and helps the site flow together.

The thing that was most appealing to me about the site is the mix of tech news, ideas and humor. Whether it be a video review of the new Palm Pre slicing some cheese or a slightly more serious post about IMAX theatres, the Gizmodo crew is always able to keep a comedic overtone that makes technology interesting even for people who don’t keep up with the trends. The ads can get a little excessive, but hey; somebody has got to pay the bills.
